What is a Slot?

A narrow opening or position into which something fits, especially one used for receiving or admitting money or other things, such as a slot in the door of a vending machine. Also called a hole, gap, slit, or aperture. He dropped a coin into the slot and dialed. A position, such as a job or place in an organization, into which someone can be assigned. I applied for a management slot.

A device, such as a game machine or computer, that accepts cash or paper tickets with barcodes to record player activity and award prizes. It may also record the amount of time a person spends playing. A slot is usually part of a display on the machine and often includes a pay table and help menu.

In a slot machine, a reel with a set number of symbols that rotate once a lever or button is pushed. Each symbol has a different value, and if they line up in a winning combination, the machine pays out a prize or a bonus event. Some machines have multiple rows of reels and many paylines.

You can map custom values to slot types to use in utterances. For example, if you want your bot to recognize the phrase NYC as a city name, you can create a city slot type and assign it to that value. You can also add synonyms for slot types to make Dialog Engine more tolerant when matching on them. You can do this by adding them to the Slot Types page or creating a regular expression pattern in the Custom Slot Types page and then selecting it as the slot type.
